Got Abrasion? DXPeople Say – No Problem!

DXPeople hear a lot of horror stories about abrasion ruining pump components. Many of our biggest customers work in industries like mining and oil extraction, where the battle against abrasion is constant and the price of unscheduled maintenance is high.

Finding solutions to the abrasion problem is one of the things we love about our jobs.

Brad Knapp DXP sales pro

Brad Knapp is one of DXP’s sales pros serving the needs of oil & gas operations in the Dakotas. The oil & gas business needs equipment that can take a beating, especially pumps.

The Problem

A customer recently called Brad to talk about a problem. One of the customer’s pumps was being used to move produced water with a lot of frac sand in it. The abrasive sand was causing the carbon piston bushing inside the pumps to prematurely wear out. The customer’s operation was relying on the pumps to move produced water to a nearby disposal and avoid costly trucking charges. In other words, the pumps were there to save a ton of time and money.

Even though the customer had chosen the right pump—a specialty tool designed to handle produced water — frac sand at the well site was more than it could handle.

The pumps were down. The customer was filling trucks with produced water. And the clock was ticking.

Brad jumped on the phone with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to see how he could get an abrasion-resistant tungsten carbide bushing. After calling the manufacturer, Brad concluded that the OEM could not get him the parts his customer needed in an acceptable timeframe.

So, he got to work.

The Solution

Rather than wait for the OEM to finally have the part he needed, Brad approached a supplier who could develop the right part in a timely manner and get it delivered as soon as possible.

The result was a pump that not only works, it works better than ever before. In fact, the customer’s pumps have been running smoothly now for six months without issues.

The customer was so pleased, it has been retrofitting its pumps at other sites with the new bushing during routine rotating equipment maintenance as their old components wear out. Brad’s effort led to a lasting, enterprise-wide improvement in pump toughness.
